One of the SANS Handler's Diary's for today fits in line with a recent post about being the The Family System Administrator, and suggestions if your parents got a new PC for christmas/festivus/Hanukkah.

Good reading.

I give them *insert computer maker here*'s tech support number.
In college I had to write ResNet's support number on my door so people would stop asking me. Jeez, just because I have 5 computers, a thin client, and a managed switch in my room doesn't mean I'm going to help you.

Did you remember to write your fee structure underneath it?

"Any problem, $200 up front."

No, but I did charge $25 to reset a password.
They always hated me when I could do it in a minute or two.

The trick to this is to tell them it will be fixed in exactly twenty-seven minutes, and to shoo them away.

Yeah but I do it as a parlor trick while completely drunk too. Its not like I'd be hiding secrets from anyone.

The "'Twas the day after Christmas" poem in there is priceless...
