This article illistrates the exact reason WHY we don't like using those little bugger at Company ----. We have to be HIPPA compliant, and those little things present a security risk to our data that we don't like taking.

However, we have found a company that makes ones with hardware level encryption built in. the capacity is very low (the larger of the two units is 128 MB) but it'll do for the data that we need to keep.

Oh, please, I'm having horrible flashbacks to the time I worked at a university. The number of IDIOTS doing theses or dissertations who kept them on a single floppy disk (this was before USB keys became de rigeur) was utterly astounding.

As was their surprise when we told them that "No I'm sorry, we can't recover your data from this corrupt disk. Since you've been reading from it and writing to it every day for years, and keeping it in your bag without protection, we're amazed it's lasted this long. Next time, read our advice sheet, which you get a copy of every year, and which TELLS you to keep important material on your 50MB network storage area. Which is BACKED UP every night!"

We even had one student complain to the College executive that we were "unhelpful" in recovering the data from his f*cked up floppy. Well, it's hard to recover stuff from certain disks, especially when you can see dents in them. It shouldn't even have gone that far.

Wow. that's pretty bad.

I did mangage to make a 90% recovery on a 5 1/4 inch disk with a large thumbprint on the disc surface once...

(And yes, I've just now dated myself! woo hoo!)
