In the name of all that is holy, upgrade your computer to Service Pack 2! If you have a reason to not upgrade it, you probably also know enough to keep your computer virus free without it. All you others, upgrade!
And while we're at it, please update your virus definitions. No, definitions dating from 2001 will not be sufficient today.

How is installing SP2 going to make one's machine virus-free? AFAIK, it doesn't come with an antivirus application inherently...although it will grouse about you getting one.

I tend to charge people more when they irritate me that way. It's the "nuisance fee" in my contracts :-)

Have I ever mentioned how much I want a Mac?

If they have anti-virus software that's five years old at ALL they need to be flogged and killed. Repeatedly. In the face.

doesn't service pack 2 actually fuck up the computer?

Only if they have software that exploits "flaws" in XP.

depends on the hardware. Most of the time, now, no. It should actually be called SP 2.99999 since they keep updating it to fix bugs with hardware.

I tried it just last week on my laptop (XP Home SP1). It still breaks horribly. Thank goodness I have a copy of XP Pro 64 waiting to be installed on it

I've installed it on hundreds of machines and have never had a problem with it. Maybe I've just been lucky.

*shrug*

SP2 has a tendency to break computers that have been around without a clean install for a long time. It doesn't like customizations. It doesn't like multiple syspreps. It doesn't like large, poorly maintained registries. This rate of error is pretty low, but high enough to be noticed.

However, any given fresh install works with it. Near universally, it's a change software made in the kernel or at the service level, a change SP2 doesn't get along with.

Ha ha! I don't even have SP1 on this puter. I don't have any antivirus software. I don't run a firewall. I have a strong cpu constitution.

Oh, and I'm not a fucking moron. That, more than anything, is why I don't have a virus-filled computer.

You know, for all that we hate the users who get all this shit on their PCs at times, I've never once seen one of my users actually get infected.

I really don't know what they do. Then again, they have good users.

On the note of your comment, though... last I checked you couldn't even get updates without SP1 anymore. MS might not have deployed that yet, I don't recall.

I assume you run a network at home since you're posting here - otherwise you would be compromised whether or not you know how to use a computer.

I don't see the point in not updating a device I use so much...
