After a few minutes of troubleshoot:

Customer: Looks like the hardware really has an defect, wouldnt you agree ?

me: yea. would agree with this diag. but unfortunately we cant order parts for this system any more. its too old.

customer: but... that cant be ! the system is still in warranty! until.... here! system warranty until 3rd... *voice gets less loud* july.... *voice becomes quite quiet* 2003... well.. OK. i guess we'll check if we can get spareparts from somewhere else.


Thank God its friday and already CLOSE to my vacation :)

I had two customers with failed hard drives this week alone - one, I recovered everything basically intact, but on the other, MFT died - I had to dig stuff out with GetDataBack, and it turned half the Hebrew file names into Chinese...

On the plus side, he surrendered quickly. I know customers who would fight that one to the bitter end.

I would have told them they could order free replacement parts by rolling back the clock in BIOS.
