so this lady calls today, and wants to know why her website files aren't showing up on her site on our server. She says she bought the hosting account with us last week and she expected her content to be there by now. I asked he when she ftp'd or published it from her local web or from the old host to our server. "Oh, no one said I had to do that" she commented, sounded confused.

Perhaps she had us confused with the magical elves hosting company, you know the ones who snap their fingers and magically transfer your content to their servers.

I'm pretty sure that it's sales people who give them that impression. I work at a hosting company, and I get at least one of those calls per day.

"But the guy in sales told me that you would move my domain over!"
"We do, maam, but we only move the domain name over. You're responsible for your web site content."

At that point, there's only three possible outcomes.

The only good one (you can guess how often this one happens):

"Oh, well, then, I guess I'll call our webmaster and get him to do that."

The one that almost makes my grizzled heart feel some emotion:

"But, they removed all of my web pages from the old server already, and I don't have a copy!"

And my most fun one:

"NO ONE TOLD ME I WOULD HAVE TO DO THAT! THAT'S INSANE! I'M NOT SOME SORT OF ROCKET SCIENTIST! LET ME SPEAK TO YOUR SUPERVISOR!"

So, yeah, fun.
