I work Remote Deskside Support...and am a Remote user via VPN as well. Got my Service Request from an end user reporting slow connectivity across the VPN. Went to check his setup to see what ISP he was accessing from -- he's dial-up. OF COURSE IT'S GONNA BE SLOW! Damn.

Oh yeah, I love those dialup VPN users. They all assume that VPN over dialup is going to be faster than regular dialup.

And when you ask them what their ISP is, they say "VPN."

The first VPN I implemented on my own used LInksys BFVR VPN routers on both sides of the tunnel.

Across a 384K Fractional T-1, I think the best data rate we ever got out of it was something like 128K. On a good day. And only if one user was on it.

Needless to say, that equipment is no longer in use, and we've purchased better (read: more expensive) hardware.

and I've learned my lesson on trying to do WAN design on the cheap.
