Last year I had this conversation with a customer in our small retail computer store;

"Can I help you?"
"I need to get memory for my computer."
"Okay," I say, accessing our database, "what kind?"
"What kind of what?"
"Of memory."
"For my computer."
Sigh.
"I realize this. What kind of computer, and what kind or size of memory."
"Oh... uh... I need it for my... my... Indian computer."
"Uh... I'm afraid I'm not familiar with the brand."
"Well, it's not called an Indian... that's just what I call it. It has an Indian name."
"I don't know of a brand with an Indian name." I think of the Toshiba tribe. Nope.
"Well, I figure it's an Indian computer. When I call for support, I get an Indian guy."
"Well, Sir, many help lines are out-sourced to India now."
"But, it had an Indian name... it was... Deli... a Dell! That's it. I've got a Dell!"
"How do you figure that's an Indian name, Sir?"
"Well, isn't that a place in India? New Delhi or something?"
"Uh... yes... but Dell is spelled D-E-L-L... NOT D-E-L-H-I."
"Well, maybe they got their name from New Delhi."

Oh, then you'll love this;

Customer asked me questions about "Mac Ahus Eccs." Huh, you ask? Mac OS X of course. I'll let the reading of X to Ecchs pass (even though it is pronounced "ten" in this case), but Ahus? Damn.

She also asked me about my shirt. It's a button up with a print on it. One side is a fish, most likely a large carp, the other side is a Samurai with a Katana. The lady said she liked my "Indian Shirt." "You mean the Japanese one I'm wearing?" "Oh, is it?" "Yes, the Japanese text and Samurai are a dead giveaway."

She then commented on the Native American symbol on my shirt.

THIS ONE;

Y'know, the ancient, revered symbol of the AIRPLANE, and the CLOCK, and the MUSICAL NOTE. WTF?!

"You mean the Tiger Dashboard icon?" "Huh?" "You know, the icon you click on in system 10 to bring up Dashboard? The system that's on that computer you were telling me you just bought and use all the time?"

I apologize to all the Native Americans hurt in the telling of this stupid, stupid, story.

as a friend of mine goes:

that's okay, i wasn't hurt. i actually laughed.

i've run into the same thing with my green shirt with a samuri or something on it and japanesse writing. which i think i need to wash....

It doesn't help that many people (incuding a few Natives) think I am Native myself. They get really confused when I tell them I'm actually Filipino... many don't know the tribe. ;) Apparently if you're Native American, anything you wear must have significance. *shrug*

But, honestly, the Dashboard icon is a Native American symbol? Sheesh.

actually i am Native american, Yaqui tribe (amung others), and ya. everything i wear has meanning. it keeps me warm and from getting arrested for public nudity. =P

OK, I admit it, I still say the X like, well X. It makes sense to me X is Roman numeral 10, UNIX ends in X, so I call it X. I can't call it 10 because is it 10.1.3 or 10.1.4?

I give up, I'll just call it kitty.

I used to say "Ecchs" as well. But to work at this store, I had to go through Apple Sales Training, and they HAMMER into you (as did my supervisor) "it is not 'Ecchs' but 'Ten.'" No matter the version (as long as it's within ten).

Hence why I let it slide. The casual user isn't going to know or care. It's the "Ahs" for OS that got me.

Just wait until Apple runs out of big cats, and it becomes "Mac OS 10.8.1 - Tabby." Or "Mac OS 10.8.1 - Here Snookums!"
