When your business depends on the internet (i.e. you think you will go bankrupt
if your internet is down for a day/few hours) you should have a backup.
Power outages happen, people drive into telephone poles, tornados happen, yadda
yadda. I have no pity for you!

Heh.

One placed I worked for did high speed internet at appartment complexes. God, I never heard a bigger bunch of whiners that were using a residential connection to run their business from, in violation of the T&Cs of their contract. We let it slide only because we did not have the authority to yank them. (We did the support and some legwork. The "network administrator" and the money went to an entirely different company)

We'd use that excuse all the time. Customers complaining "I neeeeed this for my business!" whilst on a residential account, would be met with "According to the Ts and Cs you're not supposed to be running a business on this account".

Of course, if they did have a business account, they could only call from 9pm-5pm! Hah! Our business plans sucked.

My famous retort to that was

"Well for an additiona 50 dollars a month, I would be happy to assist you with upgrading your account to the superior service and performance of our business class online service!"

The only difference between the residential service and business service was that business cost 50 more dollars a month, and we wouldn't rate cap them for uploading too much - otherwise it was the same equipment and everything else.

I always enjoyed the idiots that would call up screaming about how their service is down and they are losing "thousands of dollars a day!", when their account is deactivated for non-payment.

Same goes with any equipment you have that you need to do your business, whether it be monitor, computer, scanner, printer or fax machine. If your million dollar business relies on an 80$ fax machine, buy two. hell buy six, you can afford it.

There are many reasons over 90% of all new businesses fail.

This would be one of them.

I'd like to add a corollary to that: don't choose the cheapest support package. You don't get five-star service on a one-star pricing plan.

I love the ones that don't understand the differnce beteween the TOS and the law.

Me: I do apologize but just to let you know that running a business on a residential internet connection is aginst the Terms of Service you agreed to when signing up. [gives link to the TOS] If you would like a business connection I can contact them to call you back regarding it.

Dumb broad who runs a business: No! It's not against THE LAW to do this. I can run a business if I want to on MY internet.

"But you can't on OURS, as per the contract you signed. Shall we move on?"

We are an elite few. We are in the unique position to tell businesspeople that they are about to make very stupid mistakes and yet we are the last people to be listened to, if we are asked at all. Yet we are almost always right. We are the people that both hucksters and their marks hate. We would be the person that stands by the carnie's booth and tells someone they are making a sucker's bet. Except we are also wise enough to know this would get our asses beat when the inevitable happens, so we stand well clear of the impending fireworks.

People just don't want to evolve.
