I just wrapped up a half hour argument with our provisioning team, in which I was unable to convince them their policy of notifying customers that their internet account is ready exclusively by email has an inherent flaw.

My head hurts and I want to go home.

I dunno, most of the clients I provision for give us pre-existing email addresses that we can and do send confirmations to.

SMS seems to be a better idea tho - one we dont use (it'd be nice if we did).

When my parents moved house a few months back my Dad, bless him, thought he could take his ADSL connection with him simply by plugging his modem into the phone line at the new house. Easy mistake to make; the guy is only a nuclear physicist so how is he supposed to understand that his broadband connection is line-specific?

Anyway, after much hilarity on my part (and embarrassment on his) he called the accounts department of his provider to advise what he'd done... BIG mistake. They needed an EMAIL from him requesting the account be moved to the new line. That email HAD to come from the main address for his broadband account. They had NO other process for actioning this.

Eventually (no help whatsoever from the provider's support guys) I managed to find the details for the webmail system his provider keeps very quiet about and called him to talk him through logging into it in his local Internet Cafe. Two weeks after that he was back on line and drafting a rather stern email to the provider’s department for sensible-yet-ultimately-ignored suggestions.

Easy. Cut off all their access and tell them that you'll send them an email when it's ready, as per their procedure.
