So I pick up a call tonight and ask for the person's name. I get "Um, this is Kelly, but I don't know how I got here." So I ask what she means and she says she was talking to her ISP, trying to set up DSL and they suddenly say they're transferring her to us...and there she was.

So I try to get her info, and she says she doesn't need me, she needs Bell South because her modem has issues. So I'm trying to get the info to see if this isn't something I can help with, like power cycling or something and a third voice comes on the line.

This little Indian voice announces that he's Bell South tech support, and just starts going on about some issue. And I'm all "Whoa, wait back up the truck here. First off, I'm not allowed to hold a call with a third party company on the line." And I TRY to determine yet again if the customer needs to go back to Bell South, or stay with me.

They argue between them for about 3 minutes and suddenly Bell South says "Okay I can take it from here!" and they hang up, leaving me wondering WTF just happened. That was just...bizarre.

You think it's bad for you... I actually work for Bellsouth, doing web hosting, and some of the things I've heard from DSL techs makes my head spin.

Oh, you can't check your email? Call web hosting!
You're having problems with newsgroups? Call web hosting!
You can't sign onto your instant messenger? Call web hosting!
Having networking problems? Call web hosting!

Apparently, we're the solve-all of all problems anywhere from dialup or DSL. I would say that the DSL techs know nothing, but that would be an insult to people who actually know nothing.

talk about transferring...

That's so funny. I work for a local ISP in Wisconsin and maybe once a month we get transfered a call from bell south. The customer is always very confused at how they got to an ISP in Wisconsin. No one here is smart enough to get the information we need to figure out what is happening though :( I wonder if some tech there has a misprinted number or some weird thing is happening with the phones.

We used to get calls for Lego because of some routing issue with the phones. that was strange. the person would be dialing the right number but end up getting us instead.
