Of those that read and post in this journal, how many of you have an office with a door you can close?
Of those, how many close your door?
Of those, how many times a day does someone just come in (not the boss) without knocking first?

The reason I ask is because this new guy (salesman!) just barges into my office to ask where the coffee was. Hmmmmm. This does not bode well for him.

Yes
Always (air-conditioned server room)
Excluding the boss? Once, maybe twice. They get the glare.

Its an air-conditioned room, I have to.
Only the boss can, the door is kept locked.

Door closes and locks 24-7 (deadbolted when I'm not in) due to being a quasi-server room. You'd think after five years, though, people would remember this when they try to barge in without knocking...but it's still a mild source of amusement to me.

Both of my bosses are in other buildings.

I have a door that I can close. I only close it when i really need privacy. It automatically locks and only I have a key. So I am never disturned without a knock when it's shut.

Yes, sometimes, and they only ever do it once. Unless it's because the machines are underwater and they're panicking, in which case they get a pass.

1. I have my own 240 sq ft office of bliss. Used to be 4 people working in here, gradually it became only my office. The CEO gets his own office, almost everyone else is in cubicle/open office format.
2. Door only gets closed when someone is coming in here for something highly confidential. Plus, I don't close it because usually I can't hear someone knocking on it(deafness)
3. See above.

Have a door, but it is a shared office. I am the Web Services Lead/Webmaster/DBA, so it'd be nice to have my own quite space from time to time.

The only ones that come in without knocking are the other IT folks. Mostly the teachers and students knock.

I am about ready to start keeping it locked because of the few self-important admins that feel it is thier right and/or duty to disrupt our day with mundane and meaningless tasks or conversations.

** glares with jealousy ***
Stuck in a small cube with no window. No workbench, so there are 4 pcs stacked up behind me - one a server. My desk is big enough for my PC and Screen, phone, and some other odds and ends. Nowhere NEAR enough space. And I'm the IT dept for a manging company with about 10 facilties/locations.

I have a door. With windows. and a fancy electronic deadbolt that got me in hot water with the Big boss up here (who I'm supposed to keep happy), and my boss in the Main office who required it. (but that's a long story)

The door is normally open, unless I'm not there. Then it gets closed and locked. If I'm doing something of a condifential nature (like investigating why a remote site has anal gay midget clown porn on the machine) or because people are annoying me, then I close and lock the door.

On average, people usually knock. Due to the windows, I have the door positioned so that I get a half reflection of who's outside the door, and hence usually poke the people outside the door before they knock. (I'm slightly paranoid) I also get asked on how to get soda out of our strange vending machine rather often, although the HR and training folks usually describe how it works when they show people where it is...

No office, not even a cubicle. I have a desk out in the middle of the floor, and approximately 23094872039487234 people troop by every hour.

I think you have to have two doctorate degrees here to even get a cubicle.

I have an office.
The door is kept closed, but not locked.
People can come in if they want to without knocking, and it doesn't bother me a bit.
I am losing the office very soon, though, and this makes me very sad.

No office with a door. I, unfortunately, have a corner cube where I face a pseudo-supervisor every day. I'm the first cube in after all of these high-falutin' office walls, so people just peer around the corner and 'voila', they're in my space.

um, not applicable to the door option. Although there are days when I'd love to be able to tell people that the person in the chair is really a figment of their imagination, and to please come back when the person is actually in the chair.

It seems like too often, but it's probably once or twice a day that I get 'surprized'. Most folk like to send me email as it leaves a paper trail.

You NEVER knock on the IT Admins door, you never THINK about touching it. You ONLY communicate by slipping notes under his desk.

Don't you read BoFH?

On other notes: I wish I had my own office, so I could get work done. Maybe...

Large, shared office with 5/6 other sysadmins which also acts as a test lab, install site and 2L support office -- i.e. sysadmin bombsite -- in a university CS department.

Door is closed but not locked; other tech can come and go freely, and it depends on the rank of the academic whether they knock or loiter at the door before they enter -- HoD and tenured professors tend to wander straight in, full professors depending on how clueful they are, and associate professors and TAs tend to (wisely) loiter.

Students also visit frequently and behavior is variable. We have a 1L helpdesk that most users go to first, so usually those that come in and ask questions tend to ask slightly interesting questions. I have the desk next to the door, so if someone comes in and asks something stupid they get the Death Glare From Hell [tm] and politely asked whether they have visited the helpdesk yet today...

Me, almost always, and pretty much constantly. Surprisingly enough, the low-level grunts are pretty polite about it (to the point where they will knock and then step way back so they don't hear me say 'come in'), but the floor supervisors will just barge right in. One of them actually got mad at me when I started locking my door.

I think they're just jealous because I have a ceiling and they just have cubes.
