A recent comment made me realise that I havn't heard anything about the 'Bastard Operator From Hell' on this community. Which is strange since he could almost be our patron saint.

While I suspect that many of you have heard of him, I wanted to inform the uninformed.
Read about his exploits here and earlier here.

Also, if there is a sudden rash of managerial replacements, it's not my fault.

He's my personal saint. I didn't even think to bring it up here, because I assumed that reading BOFH is standard in the IT industry. Has been with all the geeks I've worked with.

Actually .. I use BOFH knowledge as a standardized acid test to scope new people out.

Makes it easy to find new hires with staying power ...

I keep a copy of "BOFH II: Son Of The Bastard" on my desk, in plain sight. Very near to the cricket bat, the precariously-balanced stack of old Sun Sparcstation IPC/IPXes, and the specially-rigged power supply.

Simon is my hero. :-D

I think the first BOFH stuff I read was email forwards of the exploits from my then-boyfriend back in 1995. *props to BOFH, not nearly as many to the then-boyfriend*

I have the dead-tree versions, myself. Excellent idea, linking here. Newcomers should know some history.

"Okay, who would win in a fight? Simon or God?"
"Uhhhh... Simon!"
"Wrong!"
"Wait, God!"
"Trick question: Simon IS God!"

If Bender didn't exist, Simon T would be God. But Bender does exist, so he comes a very close second. :)

I've been reading BOFH for a long while now.

And yes, One assumes it's standard reading for anyone in the IT industry.

There's also JustPFY, which is an amusing read as well. (especailly some of the submitted stories...)

I got email from Simon Travaglia himself once, at the last company I worked for. :)

Unfortunately, it was because one of my users was port-scanning his FTP server. :(

And he was merely courteously reporting that you now were the proud owner of one charcoaled user-shaped lump?

He's all class, that man -- let me deal with it in my own way.

I went around to the luser's house and beat him in the head with a nine-iron until he couldn't remember his name*.

* may not have actually happened, but that's how *I* choose to recall events
