a day in the tech support life by valis

ACTUAL start of phone call:
customer : "yes hi, my screen has gone all sideways and all the icons are sideways and my wallpaper is stretched and i cant get the mouse to work right!" (caller laughing and people in background laughing AT her)
valis : "okay ma'am... let me see... hmmm... well is there enough room on your desk for you to lay down sideways in order to use the pc?"

unfortunately there was not enough room on the desk, i advised her to start clearing things off of the desk. customer informed me that there STILL would not be enough room to lay out sideways on desk.
i informed customer that i was starting up a support ticket with "user's screen is sideways and customer refuses to lay down sideways on desk to access pc"

customer (without thinking) "no no no! dont put in the ticket i refuse to lay down on my desk!"
valis "... hmmm... i dont think i'm prepared to go THAT far with this ma'am... "
*sound of more laughing in the background of customer's office*

so long story short, a quick trip into the display properties fixed the problemo, and she got my name so that the people in the office could just call ME in the future, lol

during this call i was im'd by a coworker with : "You are NOT allowed to have that much fun on the phones!!!"

I had a similar call recently. We were in the process of stepping a client through changing out their computer for a loaner PC which we had sent to them. (Sidenote: A new hire was sitting in my cube with me for training purposes.)

After getting a backup of their data, we shut down their server and I instructed the client to begin moving cables from their PC to the loaner.

Customer: "Oh crap! This means I have to get down on the floor"

{Pause}

Customer: "But then again...I have always been good on my back."

{I glance over to the newbie and shrug. How am I supposed to respond to that?!}

"Ma'am, it's either that, or go out side and push the building over. I'm just trying to make this easy for you."
