That sounds like a management thing.

... to notify management that the e-mail servers are down, of course. They also expect status e-mails every 15 minutes while you try and resolve the problem.

Not faxes, those aren't good for the paperless office, and not phone calls, these people don't have TIME to listen to you, they want it in an e-mail so they can ignore it at thier leisure.

It's something we get requests for on a regular basis.

Policy decision?

At the call centre where I work we're required by policy to have queue-tracking software running, despite the fact it's worse than useless, because no version of the program has ever given us accurate information.

Ha! Imagine, I just had to deal with that EXACT problem this evening. We just left them a voicemail instead, as campus security wouldn't let us call them past 10pm.

Fun, ain't it?

Hahahahaha, when did you start talking to my customers. I've had many of them request email alerst when our services go down.

I figure that anyone stupid enough to demand to be emailed when email is unavailable deserves to get exactly what they asked for.

*G* well... its also possible the other way around.
i once reported an problem with the mailserver to my ISP (via phone!)
me: "your mail server or the mail services are down. how long will that take ?"
answer from ISP was: "Send us an email with this request please"
me: "aeh... as i said. your mail server is down. i cant send you an mail"
ISP: "oh... ok. do you have an web-mail acount on our webmailserver ? can you send one from thre ?"
me: *sighs* "that wont help. the webmailservice is on the same server and so with that also down"
isp: "do you have an hotmail or goooglemail acount from where you can send the mail ?"
me: *grrrrr* alright. check your mails. can you access your mails at the moment ?
isp: "wait a moment...... *pause* ..... aeh... no. i cant. seems like the mailserver is down. i'll ask the techs"
me: *cries*
