[identity profile] abstrak-tokatl.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] techrecovery

i know this is where we usually vent, but i have a question. With all the bitching and moaning. are there any good places to host a site? paid of course. or does our collective annoyance demand that we not recomend anything?

I use PowWeb.com. They offer plenty of space, use Linux servers, have a control panel that allows you to make all changes to your site without having to contact their support. You get a lot of email accounts, anti-spam functionality, MySQL, etc. etc. for $7.77/month (paid quarterly, yearly, or bi-yearly).

I also use Omnis.com. They are fairly similar but cost a bit more. Their control panel is a bit more intuitive though. I still prefer PowWeb.com though.

There's also Lunarpages.com, which do 3GB storage and 100GB transfer a month for $US8. PowWeb gives you LOTS more capacity, for that price though. However, I don't think they offer dedicated server plans, so if you're likely to need that kind of capacity, it's probably good to start with someone like Lunarpages who you can ramp up with.

There's also Rochenhost.com, who are apparently the beez neez, but I wouldn't know since they rejected my sign-up with no communication or explanation whatsoever - so I don't recommend them if that represents their usual customer service .

Long time lurker, first time post.

(I work tech support, but it's on a Government contract so I can't post funny stories about it)
Have a look at www.hostingforaquid.co.uk. Packages are pretty reasonable.

Agreed. I haven't hosted there in quite some time, and they are certainly not in the business of offering the most features, bandwidth, etc., but their support is top notch and very responsive.

They also are strong supporters of various Neopagan, women's rights, and a myriad of other political issues, so if this sort of thing is important to you, all the more reason to check them out.

For a while I was known to them as "that crazy IMAP user", and they couldn't tell me anything about it except that it was there and if I needed them to do something with it to ask. They actually cater to newbies somewhat more I think, however stupid newbies are out of luck. Stupid, abusive newbies will be asked to find another hosting provider, and I have to respect that.

I've been using networkeleven.com for a while now and I've been very impressed with their service.

<3 for www.dreamhost.com
They're reliable, offer $$ for referrals, increase your quota for every month (i think it's month) that you're with them, and it's a good value.

I wouldn't know.

I host sub-ether.net myself, meaning It's a physical machine that sits in the rack and is attached to the internet via a DSL line.

Good part? Unlimited bandwidth (well, as much as I can push up the DSL line...), and mostly unlimited storage (i.e., I can use the whole damn disk if I want to).

Bad part? the DSL line goes down, no web or mail. Fortunately, Speakeasy and covad are very good at providing a reliable DSL connection.

I'm using servernorth, they host the userfriendly.org site, so i figure if it can handle that traffic it can handle mine.

I have two;

1and1 hosting - I got a deal for free hosting for 3 years.
So far I've been very happy with them.

my other site is webfeat-inc.com -- their tech support is awesome.
