overheard this lil call from a coworker.

picture this.
a category five hurricane is bearing down on houston currently.
there is an evacuation order.
people fleeing the city.
(a large company) has been evacuated, and all non essential services and servers have been shut down
SOMEONE, dont know if it was the VIP or the secretary or what, called.
but this was actually said during the course of that call
"Well VIP's NEED to get their EMAIL!"

as in, i dont care if there is a cat 5 hurricane about to obliterate houston, send someone in there to turn back on the mail server cause i'm IMPORTANT.

beyond that it's been the run of the mill "right click on "my documents"" --- "where is "my documents"'?" kinda stuff at this new job...

Valis

Man - I'd suggest that the tech let the person know that you would be more than happy to let the VIP go back in and have him turn on the mail server, because the techs are far more important to keep alive so they can answer STUPID questions.

Another NASA person. I'm @ GSFC.

Hmmm. JSC is down hunh? That could make life interesting for all of the Outlook folks, regardless of center.

Glad I'm NOT over at HQ!

Just do me a favor? If you're where I think you are (based on your LJ location) PLEASE make sure you fill out ALL the fields in the remedy tickets when you pass 'em on?

Makes my life a LOT easier.

I say that because you WILL get the nice old person who does everything by rote and DEITY HELP THEM if somebody changes a server addy so their bookmarks &/or shortcuts don't work.

We get the same bunch of calls for any Hurricane that's hit florida.

We were so pissed off from the heartless customers coming into chat wondering why they couldn't get through on the phones (The 800 number was blown out by sprint in that area) and why their internet was down, we created a pre fab for this stupid bitching about speeds.

I am sorry, as I am sure you know, hurricane Katrina has caused havoc in Florida and the gulf coast. Damage in excess of 100 billions has been done, hundreds of thousands of people have been left without homes, and tens of thousands of people have died. Still, millions remain without power and long term global economic consequences are inevitable. This issue is also causing the Internet in your area to be a little slower then usual. I really wish there was more I could do for you right this second.

I used this once - the person on the other end stopped bitching and was quiet for around 5 minutes before I said anything else.

death toll

Nobody is a VIP when you have a huge Category 5 hurricane bearing down on any state. As most people have seen, Louisiana still hasn't recovered. Everyone is on the same playing field when bad weather rolls though. Tell those Very Idiotic People.... VIP to shut the f* up!

I'm still using the Katrina excuse on any late shipments.

"Alright, sir, so you want us to send a tech to that building, and RISK THEIR LIVES so you can get your email? Is that what you're saying? Which one of our techs should give up their life so you can give your email? I mean, there's Roger, he's got a wife and kids, but I'm sure that they would understand if daddy didn't come back ever because of his work. There's also Bill. His mother is in the hospital, and is dependant upon her son to continue treatments for her cancer, but I'm sure she can go without those treatments for the rest of her now-very short life, so you can get your email. That way, two people will die for you to get your email..."

If they haven't shut up by that time, then they deserve to die in a fire.

"Sir, here's the keys and the directions to the site and how to turn on the server. You want it back on so badly, kindly do it yourself. But first please write your name and SSN on your arm in black magic marker so we can identify your bloated dessicated corpse later. Thank you for being an asshole. Have a nice day."

I'll tell you what they fired someone else for. You know the easter egg in netscape 4? The mozilla quote? Well, this girl wrote that on this guy's white board. When he wasn't there. The boss deemed it "offensive" and fired them both. After that I think he just didn't bother having a reason at all.

Dear god please tell me that someone laughed in his face and made him feel like a jackass. PLEASE tell me they didn't satisfy the wanton needs of one person by risking someone else's life, just so they could check their cursed email. And if they did, PLEASE tell me you're gong to the news stations about it?

ONE VIP is IMPORTANT.
MANY VIPs are MORE important
Sys-Admins are MOST important because they keep the services for "ALL!" VIPs online :)

These are like the people in Syracuse who called us during the Northeast's power outage a few years ago and demanded we find some way to turn on their servers. And when we said we couldn't, they demanded to know when the servers would be back on.

Well, let me just pick up the red phone here...

"Well VIP's NEED to get their EMAIL!"

"No sir, VIPs need to get a grip. Email is down, so try dealing with life in an intelligent manner until it comes back up."
