[personal profile] jecook posting in [community profile] techrecovery
My style of moderation is the same method that I use in my personal journal, which has three four rules.

1) 1st amendment is loosely enforced here. (See explaination about this here.)

2) Don't be a dick.

3) This community is for talking about the "behind the scenes" at tech support. don't ask for help here, you will be mocked mercilessly. Also, try to keep the language R rated. Read the Info page for a better description of what I mean.

4) Don't be a dick.

That having been said, I'm pretty easy going, but if I have to wield the Ban Hammer, look out, 'cause I gets uggly fast.

Edit:: I'm speaking as one of the new mods, not the original moderators or the original creator.

Ya'll had to push me. ::sigh:: As if my life didn't suck enough already.

I think we've always had a certain amount of "tech to tech" advice from our more established members on certain experiences in the business, such as the recent Ontrack discussion. I wouldn't advise any newbie to ask for this before we get to know you, but I've been known to lead the onslaught on stupid newbies who can't read the community profile :).

That said, I've had the fleeting thought of making new journals just so I can post something stupid and let everyone get the bitching out of their systems. Catharsis is good, methinks :P.

exactly.

i reached my limit yesterday with that mallory person or whoever it was. they were constantly posting the same inflammatory, completely unhelpful, off the rules, stirring it up for no particular reason post.

after deleting the thing 5 times last night i went ahead and removed his posting access.

after he (apparently) left the community and rejoined, apparently regaining posting access, and posted the same post AGAIN, i removed him completely, changed the community to a moderated membership comm (hopefully only temporary), and promptly rejected his membership a few minutes later when he tried to join again.

i'm hoping that moderating new members doesn't have much of a disruption, and should only be a short term thing.

Valis

i'm very laid back, i'm very open, i give lots of leeway. but if an offending post has been made, deleted, and re-made 5 times and you just aren't getting the hint, then... well... you fall into that number 4 you have up there. also the number 2.

that would probably explain it ;)

it was 50/50 to me whether or not to post a message regarding the continuing incident, in the end i voted against posting something else on an already tired, worn out, and unnecessary topic.

feel free to forward me the message, i left a comment on the offenders latest lj entry explaining the action i had taken, he should have responded to me.

yeah, that's the only one that's come up for approval. i wouldn't have done anything if he'd simply posted his comment in whatever thread was currently already going in whatever post that already existed. but i didn't feel it necessary to drag the unpleasantness back into a whole nother post.

do you know or remember the list of all the new mods on this comm?

it'd be nice to be able to make a post to the comm that is only visible to the other mod's.

bullshit, you use censorship as your personal tool. Looking back at the number of off topic posts that you so readly included yourself in proves the bullshit as opposed to the number of items that have been removed. Ban me please as I've had enough of your crap but no matter, I'm already gone.

Wow? That so did . . . not make sense at all. You want someone to ban you though you're leaving? Why didn't you just elave in the first place? You would have looked like less of an ass.

Out of curiousity, have you tried using the admin console to ban non-members? I don't know if it still lets you, but the ban_set command used to let you ban anyone from a community, member or not.

Not suggesting you ban nonmembers or that you don't, but it is possible to ban someone who's not a member of a community.

URL:

http://www.livejournal.com/admin/console/

Syntax:

ban_set [user] from [community]

HTH. HAND.

unless i completely missed something i never really remember any posts being deleted or removed by any moderator prior to this incident so not sure where he's getting that info.

perhaps he wants us to ban him so that it'll be easier to resist his temptation to flame in the future?

Don't be a dick.....

Ahhhh sonofa BITCH /Gilbert Gottfried. That's one we'll need the duct tape for.

You'll never take me alive, mod boy. Not without a lot of Guinness. We're talking kegs. Bring the keg and we'll have Techies Gone Wild... no wait, where are you going? Dammit! I'll put it back on, I'll put it back on! We don't even have to use the discoball tap that plays porn music when you pour! Comon.

Fine. I reiterate my post-mortem necrophiliac tendencies.

*quick translation of all this crap:* Congrats on the new powah. Use it well, or at least amusingly.
