Have you seen Apple's list of things to do before contacting AppleCare? (AppleCare is their extended warranty program.) They're the good standbys of reboot, check your connections, run disk utility...ending with wipe and reinstall your OS. Yup, that will solve most any problem.
I forwarded this as a suggestion to our own Knowledge Base team. They're actually going to incorporate some of it (albeit more politely-worded) into one of our articles about "How to contact the support center." too bad no one ever reads our knowledge base before they call.
