Symptoms:

The staff exchange server is currently unavailable. All staff will be unable to read and send email.

Along the same lines, my college's IT Dept will send a message to all faculty/staff something along the lines of "The email server will be taken down at 6:00pm today, and will be back up and running by noon tomorrow." The problem with that, is the message will be sent at like 5:54pm, 6 minutes before it's supposed to go down, so then you don't get the message, and can't get into your email, then at 12:30 the next day you get the message, along with one that says "the email server is now back up" and it's like "gee, thanks for the info!"

Or better yet, when the campus internet goes out along with the servers that host the website, and therefore the webmail interface, and CSS will send an email via the internal mail server to everyone explaining what the problem is and how long it'll be before it's fixed. Which no one but CSS personnel can get to because all non-CSS routes to the email servers are down. And then CSS doesn't understand why everyone bitches at them for lack of information. *shakes her head*

File this one next to "Why don't you just email all of us the next time the email server goes down unexpectedly, so we'll know not to call?"
