We got an ethernet card today, and a self-installing internet. Well, I know how to put the ethernet card in and everything BUT this is the problem: how do I ground myself, or since I'm just putting an ethernet card in, do I not need 'grounding' thanks for help.

And maybe someone can help me with the internet installation later on? I'll post again maybe this weekend or next.

You should be safe if you avoid any staticy clothing and touch the metal of the case before touching any of the electronics inside. This isn't ideal procedure, but it's always worked fine for me in a pinch. I just wouldn't advise doing with someone elses machine, 'cause that can get messy.

The easiest way is to touch or keep contact with the metal of the case to remove any static electricity built up in you. Another option is an ESD strap which are fairly cheap and can be purchased from most computer stores. Another thing I should mention is to keep the machine plugged in while doing this. I know that may sound strange but it's true. Keep the machine plugged in because the grounding in the house will help absorb any ESD that you may send into the motherboard.

Of course, have machine off when it's plugged in. That should go without saying but you know.

Note that even when a machine may appear off, an ATX power supply may still provide standby power. Shut it off from the back of the computer as well.

Another alternative, if there is no switch on the power supply, is just to unplug the power cable from the back for a few seconds and then plug it back in.

Hm, I've never seen an ATX PS without a physical disconnect switch, but it could happen. It'd be really rotten design, tho =)

My motherboard has a standby power LED mounted on the motherboard, standing as good warning not to poke at it unless it's really and truly off =)

dear god no, thats a voltage selector, it fiddle with that while connected to power it can kill your Power SUpply and in cheaper models your mainboard.

back in the day all computers had one ON/OFF button (that connected to the power supply somehow... thus it was usually located at the back) and it was good. That is until all these computers started coming out with a Power Button on the front of the case THAT DIDN'T ACTUALLY SHUT THE COMPUTER OFF (usually it sends it into 'standby'... being it uses less power, but is still on).

Thus many computers have 2 "power switches"... an easy access one and a master switch.
