Microsoft "Genuine Advantage" cracked in 24h: window.g_sDisableWGACheck='all'
AV sez, "This week, Microsoft started requiring users to verifiy their serial number before using Windows Update. This effort to force users to either buy XP or tell them where you got the illegal copy is called 'Genuine Advantage.' It was cracked within 24 hours." .

Before pressing 'Custom' or 'Express' buttons paste this text to the address bar and press enter:
javascript:void(window.g_sDisableWGACheck='all')

It turns off the trigger for the key check.

sigh...

Since that javascript exists on the windows update server, I'm betting that this workaround will be patched within like a day, if that.

Actually, this is convenient for me, being someone who HAD XP, then someone lost my disk and "made" me a new one... so I have what they'd consider a fake copy and such... despite having gotten it before. But due to that person and moving a few times, I've got no proof. Nor the money to pay like, over $100. >.

The only thing that matters is your COA key. So it doesnt matter how you obtained the cd, as long as the COA is authentic.

I just need a valid key now, then. XD
Since that got lost long before the CD did, I suspect that'll be even more difficult. Ugh.

And where there's stores that take returns... there is esp. a way. XD

There's also now a hex edit to one of the DLL files that does the same thing, and would at least require them to release a new version.

But we've been down this road before. It's a game of cat and mouse, and to a certain extent, I'm not sure MS cares. Those of us who are inclined to get past the hoops will do so no matter what they come up with - the hope is to keep the average luser from doing it and to maybe catch the big fish while they're at it.

They'll never spend more money on legal fees to sue someone for more than the person owns to prove a point. This isn't the RIAA we're talking about here.
