You know what I am really sick of. Customers treating spam like it is the end of the universe. And not even pr0n, which I could vaguely understand that some folks would have moral objections to. But just your average run of the mill lame adds and such. They get so uptight about it and threaten to change ISP's etc (yeah like that makes a difference)

I once had an uptight cust challenge me with what I do about it. My reply shut him up "To be honest sir I just delete it as it comes and don't give it another thought"

Seriously on the scale of problems it's a tiny nuisance for the average user (yes I know on a global scale it costs a lot of time and effort, but) lusers need to stop worrying about it because it is not going away.

And of course you get -- my least favourite line -- the following:

"I NEVER GOT SPAM BEFORE I GOT YOUR ISP!!!!!111"

You probably didn't sign up on a shit-ton of websites, either.

Oh, my favorite one is...

I signed up for your spam blocker and I still get spam.

Yeah, it will take away the majority...but spammers are changing their methods daily. So fuck off and die. Kthx.

I once had a guy who wanted to be taken off the main mail server and put on a special one (since we would filter out the majority of spam before it even gets to them).

The brilliant luser (at least he admitted that it wasn't smart of him) got 'abc' as his username/email address. Because it "would be easy to remember".

Well, he got so much spam, we started filtering stuff he needed. Well, too bad for you. You chose the bad UN. We didn't have a "special mail server" without spam controls. x.x

Actually you'd be surprised what a combination of letters and numbers in your email address seems to do to spammers. I have a hotmail address with a random series of letters which gets about 5-20 spam a day and my other one with letters and ending with numbers has never received a single spam email in three years.

Well said.

What people don't realise is that NOTHING is 100% idiotproof, and so long as some people take the bait the spammers will still keep on going. I just slap it in a bulk mail folder and hit "empty" once a week or so to keep the pipes clean. ;)

People call me bitching about getting 3-4 pieces of spam per day. They are livid and demand to know why the company is not doing something about it. I patiently explain that we get over 3 MILLION e-mails into our system per DAY, and that 65% of that is spam, and that 80% of THAT 65% actually IS getting blocked, leaving a few hundred thousand pieces of spam getting through. Given that we have 145,000+ mailboxes, that means 2 or three per person, on average, and that ain't too farkin' shabby, considering a few years ago, people were getting 2-300 per day and calling us to get their e-mail addresses changed!

Sorry about the run-on, there...sheesh. See what they do to me?

Changing ISPs can make a significant difference.

I get ~ZERO spam at my fastmail.fm accounts. My email account for my ISP, cox.net, has never even been used, yet I got 30-40 spams/day on average the one time I logged in to it.

For the record, I get *zero* spam at work, and zero spam in my two primary personal accounts. I have gotten 4 pieces EVER in my gmail account.
