So i'm the phone with a customer, and his cell phone starts ringing.

He says "hang on, this might be an important call" he was on the phone for almost a minute.

It's been a few minutes.

Now he's just clicked over on to the other line for a call waiting.

I want to hang up.

he can't find 'my documents'...

why can't we make software for mac os...

Damn straight. "proper use of employee time" and all that, if nothing else.

Yeah, this sounds like one of those, "Look, call back when you need your documents KTHXBAI!"-moments.

Do they record you, or can you put this call on mute until the caller hangs up themselves?

Ah. Those ones I tend to give twenty seconds. If it takes longer than "Hello? Oh, hold on Jim, I'm on another call" to get back to me, they get Mr Dialtone. I don't care how much they make, a technician's time is more valuable than theirs.

I remember these people. I would tell them that I could hold for only one minute and would have to disconnect if they didn't come back. I would hang up if they didn't return. I don't have time for you to be sitting there making "snookums" with your wife, husband, girlfriend, etc. I have a queue full of calls waiting and I would liek to get to them as well. You can call back when you aren't so occupied.
Worked for me, my boss knew I was doing it and never complained.

You could run the mouthpiece of your headset against some rough cloth, like the cubicle walls if they're anything like the ones here, and it'll just sound like a ton of static on the line. Eventually, the customer will hang up, and it'll sound like you're still trying to talk to them (if you keep talking saying 'I can't hear you') :P
