Funniest (or possibly scariest) overheard comment today:

"No, you need speakers for sound"

I wonder what goes through people heads at times.

*Yes, I know he could have headphones or whatever, but he needs *something* to play the sound through if he wants sound.

Even better, from a call /I/ had.

Me: "Sir, you won't be able to connect while in Safe Mode."
Cust: "But isn't that how I'm supposed to do it? Isn't it better for the computer?"

The PC speaker. One place I worked had quite a few Gateways that had a reghack installed so it provided the windows sounds. One guy had the microsoft sound play at every single event. On the pc speaker. You know, the one that beeps and boops? It was horrible. Absolutely horrible.

I think it's just a generic hack for machines that don't have sound cards. And it's E-VILE.

I've had that one. This year, even.

"I can't hear any sounds from my PC!"

"What kind of speakers do you have?"

"Err... oh bugger." *click*

Whenever I heard "Do you think I'm stupid?", I just send freezing silence down the line. The lack of "no" is a great way to tell them that yes, in fact I do think they are stupid. Really, really stupid with cherries and whipped cream on top.

I was once roped into a management course where they evaluated the relationship between geeks and management (although not named as such) as "management is scared of the geeks because they think the geeks consider them stupid." To which my reponse was "Well, yes. Because we've discovered that on average, they ARE. We could lie about it, but we're not paid that much."

Management wants to seem smart on technical issues, but their attempts just make them look more ignorant. I have no problem with someone not being well-versed on the issues, so long as they're willing to admit they're not quite up on those areas, and don't bullshit themselves down the wrong path.

Of course, then you have boxes like these compaqs they make us use at work. There is a shockingly decent speaker buried in the front panneling somewhere that is directly hooked to the soundcard on the motherboard.

In addition to the speaker jacks in the back and headphone jack in the front.
