Tech support fun:

Me: (standard greeting)
Her: Let me put you on hold.
(time passes)
(she comes back, explains problem)
Me: What operating system are you using?
Her: Like NT? 2000?
Me: Well, NT, 2000, 98, 95...
Her: Oh. It's Windows NT 2000.
Me: (so not in the mood for this) Is it NT or 2000?
Her: NT, so I guess Windows 95 then.

*sob*

Heh, what about the ones that say they have windows, but can't find My Computer or the Start button...but amazingly enough, there's some options on the top of the screen...like an apple on the left! :P

Ha, yeah, it gets annoying even AFTER you tell them where it is. I also just love when they say "Office 2000" or "AOL" :P

You: Ok, you know that bar across the bottom of the screen? Ok, left-click the button on the lefthand side of that bar labeled "start". Ok, now turn your head to the left and read what it says on the menu that popped up. Does it say Windows 2000? Windows NT?

;)

Well if they say there's nothing there, then you know it's XP.

If you adjust it for small text and icons on the start menu, it also shows nothing regardless of the OS... so you still can't be sure it's XP...

Some Slashdotters might actually claim that "Internet Explorer" is the operating system that Windows users are really using.

I'm wonderign what you were doing letting her put you on hold.

The last time somebody tried that on me, they got hung up on. I have better things to do than listen to someone else's hold!

Just as bizarre, is every so often we will get voicemail messages of hold music.

I have the 1st level agents call me, and put me on hold so I can fall asleep to the boring hold music.

On a somewhat related note, I work for a CABLE HSI company...

'Yes, I just started my DSL connection...'

Or they refer to their modem as their 'Coxbox'. :headdesk:
