(no subject)

Had a phone call earlier from the head's PA. He was having laptop issues, could I pop up and have a look? Sure, says I, and I toddle off up there. Have a quick play, decide I'm going to need to bring it down to my office so I can work without him looking over my shoulder.

I discover the anti-virus is 4 months out of date. And it's Sophos, which sucks. Uninstall that, install him AVG. Run AVG. An hour later, it has found 15499 viruses (no, that's not a typo. I really did say 15499). This has amused me greatly. It's also amused his PA, and my direct boss. The head himself is suitably embarrassed. What other job could you openly take the piss out of the CEO (equivalent) and get away with it? :)

I wonder if there's a world record for the amount of viruses found - I've never seen that many in one place before :)

Hellfire, that is quite a substantial number of nasties! *salute!*

Hey, nifty icon! *Reciprocates clingage*

And he didn't notice any slowdowns?? Gawd... he should be sacked for infecting the network. :)

I've seen viruses past 70,000

[identity profile] caerleon.livejournal.com 2005-05-26 01:13 pm (UTC)(link)

Computer over.

Alright Edgar, now drop a train on these viruses!

[identity profile] oh-kevin.livejournal.com 2005-05-26 02:04 pm (UTC)(link)
i'm the only mac user in the office.

i laugh when they talk about anti virus, and how they update it so they are 'protected with the latest version'

my current frustration are those friggen german spam mails... anyone else seen em? exchange can only filter out so much...

[identity profile] mjkauffman.livejournal.com 2005-05-26 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Seen em, yep. Only spam we ever got at work. Apparently, every employee at the company I work for (a Fortune 500 company no less) got them.

We were highly amused.

[identity profile] prozacnation.livejournal.com 2005-05-26 04:07 pm (UTC)(link)
And all these luser call into tech support asking "What are they!? Make them stop! I don't know anyone in Germany!"

Then um why did you try to open it and click on the link?

[identity profile] tjernobyl.livejournal.com 2005-05-26 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a nasty one. Dictionary-attack spams everyone on the local ISP with the hope that they don't filter local email... Tricky tricky.

Is the content actually interesting to someone who speaks German?

From what I understand, the sites contain Neo-Nazi propoganda.

[identity profile] eightofspades.livejournal.com 2005-05-27 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
Neo-Nazi propaganda, as jecook said. Thing about that one (Sober.Q) is that the links were *just* that. No malware was evidenced during any time spent analyzing them that I picked up, and I monitor a lot of sources.

Sober.Q was posed to accept new commands this past Monday. I've heard nothing - but all the machines that Sober.Q infected (strictly speaking, Sober.P, which mutated into .Q for a week) are still out there, waiting.

not viruses, but i've seen someone with 120,000 spyware objects in ad-aware.

[identity profile] geekgrrl-ca.livejournal.com 2005-05-26 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I've detected about 30 virus's in the start up section of msconfig with out a virus scanner, I shudder to think what we would have found with a scanner.

As for crappy emails, I don't get phishing but I do get lots of 419 on my gmail.

[identity profile] raininglight7.livejournal.com 2005-05-27 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
I get lots and lots of 419 on my gmail too. I wonder why the 419ers seem to like gmail so much...?
