Our local borough sends out periodic emails to all the IT support staff about upgrades planned / problems they're having etc. This morning, there was one about them upgrading Sophos Enterprise Manager. There have since been two emails to the mailing list, one saying "I am very sorry but all this is a little above my head! Could someone help me so that I can ascertain what we have here at <school>", and the other saying "How do we tell what version we are on?"
The two people concerned are the only IT support members for their respective schools. I despair, I really do.
On another note, (I can't remember if I already posted about this one, so apologies if I have), two of our PCs that are under warranty had their motherboards fried by persons unknown (well, we suspect, but can't prove anything) a few weeks back. One of the replacement motherboards was fine, the other fried the processor as soon as I plugged it in. The replacement for the replacement has proved to be a nightmare. I've had two socket 775 motherboards, a socket 483 (I think) processor, and a socket 754 processor. Apparently, the correct processor is on a courier to me now, and will be delivered by 12 noon. 10 minutes ago. I'm still waiting, but not holding my breath.
And I think it's safe to say this supplier is dumped, as soon as all their crap is out of warranty. How hard can it be to get a motherboard and processor that bloody match?! It shouldn't take four separate deliveries! (The original motherboard and the socket 483 were in the same bloody box. Someone should've noticed they were incompatible!)
But I got to work this morning to an email from one of our teachers saying "I love you I love you I love you I love you I love you. Don't worry, I won't stalk you or anything. You're fab Jo. Thanks a million" because I fixed her laptop for her yesterday. So it's not all bad.

Date: 2005-05-20 08:47 pm (UTC)I just installed a new Socket 754 Sempron for the first time. I don't know if this is how all the newer socket processors work or what, but the seating it into the board was extremely easy. It has a plastic arm that rotates around to secure the heatsink/fan to the processor. It was freaking awesome. Sooo much easier than all my Socket A Athlon XPs, where I have to use a knife to hold out the metal bar far enough to get over the plastic humps. Meh.
