Why does it take a media state disconnected error to get a customer to listen to me when I say

'I need you to be 100% sure the modem is connected to your computer."

How hard is it to go to your modem, see that 'big phone cord' is plugged in there and then ACTUALLY FOLLOW IT

NOT GUESS

NOT JUST LOOK

FOLLOW IT

to the computer?

I get way too many people upon seeing the message "Non-system disk or disk error, replace and press any key when ready" SWEAR UP AND DOWN there is no floppy in the drive. I finally insist that they push the eject button on the drive.... "Oh."

Last week, I had a customer who "wasn't getting sound from his DVDs". First thing I check - are the speakers plugged into the green socket? No, they are plugged into the blue socket. Okay... I tell him to plug them into the green jack, then proceed to waste 20 minutes trying to find why is there still no sound, only to find out he left them in the blue (line-in) socket...

I had that call today.

"Media State:
Media Disconnected"

"Ok, check the connections."

"Yeah, everything looks fine."

"Well, there's only one cause of that error message. That's because it's disconnected."

"Nope, everything is connected."

"Ok then, you have a faulty ethernet connection. Bye!"
