Gentleman comes in bearing a Gateway. I ask what's wrong with it.

"...it's broken?"

YELLOW ALERT.

I prod a little more. What's it doing? What's it not doing?

"...it's not working right?"

RED ALERT.

Okay, let's hook up the stinkin' box and see what's going on. Before I turn it on, he finally describes a problem that sounds an awful lot like a power supply going south.

"And I kept flipping this reset switch, and that just made it worse..."

Reset switch? Sir, with all due respect, what the hell are you talking about!?

...do you, perhaps, mean this little red switch? The VOLTAGE SELECTION SWITCH!?

"Yeah! That's it!"

BATTLE STATIONS!

The fan in this thing is seized up to the point that I have to push like hell to move it. It's full of smokerguk and dustbunnies and the smell of scorched circuitry.

And the crowning glory:

After I called Gateway for a price, I called the guy to authorize the charge.

"How likely is it that this will fix my computer?" he asked.

I almost choked. "Extremely likely," I replied. He seemed happy with that. No way in HELL was I going to guarantee it. If this genius is sitting there frobbing the voltage selector switch, who knows what other stupidity he could be inflicting on this poor box?

Oh boy

Gateways just seem to be too much for these people. They may want to start off with something easier, like an HP, or an iMac. But even then, we remember the lady who put hers in the oven...

Every computer repair store should have a punching bag in the back. For employee moral.

I need to implement my [zap] button on the phone.

you stick an electrode on the chair of every employee, and wire it to the phone. when I hit my zap button, you jump.
