Oh... I'm new.
Apr. 28th, 2005 12:55 pmHi all. I'm new and stuff.
I work HSI Tech support. I would love comming to work everyday if I didn't have to deal with stupid people.
I have a pretty classic example of what makes me angry.
Customer: "I can't get online."
Me: "What are the lights on your modem doing?"
Customer: "Nothing. They're all off."
Now, at this point, it's important to clarify exactly what they mean. 'All off' to one customer could just mean the sync lights are off, which, amazingly, is not 'all off'.
Me: "You mean every single light? Including the power?"
Customer: "Yeah, none of the lights are on at all."
Customer blubbers on about how she thinks her service has been disconnected because her modem is off.
Me: "Can you make sure the power is plugged in?"
Customer: "It is. It has to be."
Me: "No, it's not. At least the power light would be on."
Long story short. Customer plugs in power. Modem syncs. Customer can connect.
I mean, if you pushed the power button on your TV and it didn't turn on, would you automatically assume your cable had been disconnected? If you turned on your curling iron and the light didn't come on, wouldn't you check the power?
Anyway, I like ranting.

Date: 2005-04-28 05:24 pm (UTC)Years ago, before I worked Tech Support, I worked as the Rental Manager for a Theatrical Lighting company in the Greater DC area. A customer who rented a bubble machine for the weekend came in and complained that the blessed thing didn't work. Now, as we had a 24 hour help line (which took messages and rang my cellphone), and I hadn't recived a call, I asked what he did. He told me he loaded the bubble fluid (correctly) and then plugged the machine in.
(Y'all see this coming, don't you?)
OK, I'll test the machine. I plug it in, turn it on and the machine comes on and works as it is supposed to.
The customer looks at it, then at me, and asks "What did you do just then?
My response: "Plugged it in and turned it on."
Cust: "Well, no one ever said there was a power switch"
I then showed him in the instructional pamphlet he had been given where the it said to turn it on. I then pointed out that the vast majority of electrical devices have on/off switches. As a safety meaure, if nothing else.
Never did give him the refund he wanted. I don't empower stupidity if I can help it.
