i just figured out how to use my sprint ppc6601 as a modem and fax machine for my laptop. Freaking awesome.

I love love LOVE my sprint ppc6601. Everyone should lobby their boss to buy them one right now.

I don't exactly share the same love for Sprint, however I must say that the data cable function (if available for your phone) is a must-have.

I'm on Alltel with an LG LX5450 phone. The data cable kit allows me to use my phone as a modem and also upload/download phone pictures, ringtones, address book information, etc. It's the Swiss Army Knife of mobile phone accessories really.

speaking of using your cell phone as a modem, do you have any sites
you could recommend for directions? Our ISP does not "officially"
support this, but would be nice info to have. :)

I'm presuming you use Sprint? Most models of phones have drivers available from www.futuredial.com. Get these drivers and an appropriate USB cable (I pimp the people at www.3gcables.com, but RatShacks usually have them in stock. ). Set up a DUN connection, dialing #777, leave username/password blank. With all devices attached, try to connect. Watch your phone confirm you are now using a data connection. Enjoy Internet wherever you may be :).

Advice: try to keep that data usage under 200MB a month or so. Doing this ensures you stay out of trouble with Sprint, since this is quite unofficial and technically against their ToS. Reports from a number of Sprint fanboards indicate most people have no problem so long as they stay under a reasonable limit. I know one person who was downloading porn through it on the road and got his Vision cancelled and had to pay $0.01 per KB. That bit him in the butt real good.

Oh yeah, make sure you have unlimited Vision. Otherwise you'll be paying that rate no matter what.
