If you bring in your computer looking like this, I reserve the right to slap you. Hard.

This is after the customer reached in and pulled out two handfulls of the stuff. (I opened the case while she was here to do a quick check for blown capacitors.)

Unsurprisingly, all the fans are shot. The motherboard and power supply are blown too, but that's more a result of the crappy power company up here.

Oh. My. God! What, did she have a party and invite all the dust bunnies in the state?

I have seen worse, but only once and I still cringe at the thought it.

It was an old Packard Bell that had some weird sticky residue all over the inside. It was so gummed up that the fans stopped spinning on the CPU.

I think it was from smoke, but I am not sure.

They should start showing people the inside of smokers' computers rather than black lungs... I think a lot of geeks would be more concerned about the condition of their computer...

And I thought my computer was infested with dust bunnies... (not that bad, but one of the memory slots now has a nice layer of dust blown there by the CPU fan).

What one really needs for this is some sort of anti-static vacumn cleaner attachment.

Fun! I remember a pc rag article about cleaning your computer, where they did a DVD with videos of how to do it. One of the 'out-takes' showed what happens if you use an air compressor on a network card that isn't tied down.

I have seen similar, but the worst thing with the ones I’ve seen is the smell from the dust, it was horrible

I've seen worse, a PS/2 Model 55 full of metallic dust (Came out of Inco's North Mine). of course, being a PS/2, it worked fine after being vacuumed out. Damned things were indestructible.

I'd be more worried that this would spawn a crud puppy.

It must say bad things about what I saw in the store I worked at that I don't think that's bad.

At all.

Haha, me too. One of my fans has so much dust stuck to one of the blades that it shakes the desk.

not bad.. some of our systems at work look like that after less than two weeks of being deployed.

I started using Antec cases, it helps cut down the dust problem, until the front filter fills up(couple weeks again)

Geeze, looking at the collection pattern, I'd be more inclined to say that was some deadly space mold from a Stephen King novel. Eeewwwwgh. Usually the crap I find is light dusty gray (relatively clean home) to greasy black (pet owner/lousy housekeeper). Never seen it in brown though. Heh. Space mold. Hope whoever blew this one out had an MCUP2 on. (military grade breathing protection)
