"OK, this time let's try typing what I actually told you to type..."

this is why i have to issue a warning before i even tell them what to type...

"now, there are no w's or http's in this, so don't type those. now type in these numbers..."

I am so, so, so glad I don't do phone support. It's so freaking nice after a long day to sit down at a totally fucked up computer and fix the entire thing without having to do any hand-holding or mouse point-directing.

Of course, the long silences while they sit on their bed and I watch SP2 install can be painful..

Installing SP2? Then fire up the PS2! Yeah, I commented to a colleague of mine who works for geek squad that SP2's installation takes FOR-FUGGING-EVER. In home computer repair, eh? You do freelance, or work for a company?

OH GOD! I HATE HATE HATE when people type really slow and you have to follow their pace to help them.

I used to work at a place where I would get called in my supervisor's office to offer feedback, which was fine. What WASN'T fine was when he would tell me to stick around until he typed said email to the other managers. He would hunt and peck like no one's business...eventually I said "I trust you to convey my feedback correctly" :)

Another one of my favorites is when I have to explain to people the importance of distinguishing between CAPS and lower case letters when entering in a password and making sure the CAPS LOCK key is off. I love when they shrug it off and say it REALLY doesn't matter....I assure you...IT FUCKING DOES MATTER!!!

Ah, the good old "If it didn't matter, you wouldn't need to call me."

Heh, reminds me of the time one of the office ladies called saying she couldn't log into her computer. Turns out her enter key was broken. Since I'd just run across campus in a snowstorm, I was in no mood to run back to the office, get the storage keys, run to the storage building, find a new keyboard, and run back to her office to install it (running was required, since it was five bloody degrees outside), she had to wait half a day for a new keyboard.

Luckily, there's such a thing as clicking on the LOGIN button. Wonder of wonders.

Now, if only she'd figured this out and told us over the phone...

"...what's the address bar?" *stab*
"...what's a telco?" *stab*

JESUS, PEOPLE... THINK!

but yes, people who can't understand a simple instruction such as that deserve to die.

That's what I figured, so thankfully, I'm not as stupid as I think you think I am. ;)

It seems like you've got a lot of instincts. I might advise you to take up something like art or politics and leave operating anything with electricity flowing through it to the professionals, mmmkay?
