I understand that not everyone is tech savvy, and not everyone needs to be. Heck, if everyone was, there'd be a lot less jobs for everyone reading this. But still, some questions just seem so obvious...

No, sir, you can't get our VoIP service with your dialup account.

It's not that obvious to the utterly clueless that doesn't understand what makes their internets go fast or slow :). See the many suggestions from your friends here on LARTs and LERTs for how to correct this normally terminal condition.

Hmm. Given that (some types of) VoIP can be run over sub-56k pipes (iLBC works down to 28k8), it's not really obvious at all. In fact, there are many companies which offer VoIP over dialup.

Even though the quality is not great and you may not want to offer it, there's no technical reason you couldn't. It's just probably not worth the hassle in most circumstances. Either way, it's a business decision, not a technical one, and the question belongs in the same class as "do you run a Usenet News server" and "Do you offer more than fifty megs free web space?"

Yes, the analog-over-digital-over-analogue thing is amusing, but sometimes the flexibility outweighs the overhead.

OK, you know what? Some marketer just now called my ISP to tell us about some new technology that DOES allow VoIP. Dunno how that works, but apparently it's now possible.
