Feel free to reply yelling at me. I feel dumb asking this.

I have Windows XP. I'm REALLY missing a few things that I had with 2k. Example:

  • The Security tab in the properties window for NTFS permissions
  • Ctrl+Alt+Del doesn't bring up that window that allows me to select task manager, lock computer, etc

How do i get these things back?

I've seen some configurations of Windows XP Professional that have this, but I am not sure how they did it or how to change it.

Searched the Microsoft KBase or Google yet?

well in XP i home and pro, you hit the three finger salute you get the task manager unless it has been diabled by management. you can also get to it from right click in the space next to your clock (empty space.)

and the NTFS perms is actually under the adminstration/some of it can be found under quota management, as you select what a user can and cannot do, the rest is under admin tools.

    Step 1.
In any folder window go to Tools --> Folder Options --> View
Scroll all the way down and unclick Simple File Sharing.
This seperates NTFS and file sharing back to non-newbie settings.

    Step2
    Bit more complicated
    Run mmc
    File
    Add/Remove Snapin
    Add
    Group Policy
    Add
    Local Computer
    Finish
    Close
    OK

Console Root ---> Local Computer Policy ---> Computer Configuration ---> Windows Settings ---> Security Settings ---> Local Policies ---> Security Options

Once you trudge your way here:
Find "Interactive logon: Do not require CTRL+ALT+DEL" and change setting to disabled

I am not sure about step two here, I am in Domain mode ( I have a DC setup here at home ) but this SHOULD let you get your ctrl alt del manager back.

Win+l will also work to lock it

    Hope it works for ya!
    :)

Choose Log-Off, then Switch User for a screen lock.

if you switch your theme to windows classic mode, you will get your three fingered solute box back.

as for your lost security tab.... sounds weird... i dont mean to insult, but are you sure your in NTFS? i've never heard of it not being there, unless its fat32

Windows XP. by default. mixes the SMB Sharing and security sharing tab. Basically the idea is the standard NTFS permisions are too complex for 90% of the users out there. Basically you end up having two settings, private data, and shared data. Its a really dumb thing, but seeing as most people used to win9x don't even realize there is a difference between NTFS and FAT32, I can see it as a good way to let the MS support people not deal with people accidently removing say, putting everyone (including their user) to the deny list of their user registry.

    thats right.....stupid me.
if you go into your folder settings, and turn OFF simple sharing, then all should be good again....
