I haven't posted in here before, but I just had to share 2 seconds worth of whining with somebody... anybody!?!

Why is it that seemingly intelligent people, technical staff no less, would decide that they would need to go in to the server of a mission critical application and delete all files that were older then a certain date or had not been updated since X? You know, your hosts file doesn't get updated much. Neither do the core configuration files that your clients pull down. Nor do your critical system files. DO NOT, I repeat, do not "search" for anything older then 6 months (when we installed your system 12 months ago) and shift-delete it!!! You do not want to pay for me to restore your entire flipping system from backup or worse, to have a technician fly out there to do it in person because you didn't know that a .dll is important. There is nothing installed on that server that we didn't put there. No touchie!

why do they access to this server? shouldn't they have been locked out of it?

They probly had Admin access given to them at some point, or since they are a manager, they 'demanded' it to satisfy their power trip fantasy.

Unfortunately, we are just the lowly vendor. We sell them the software, install it on a server that is *supposed* to host only our app, configure it, and bail them out forever after while they attempt to maintain it. A lot of the sites like to strip off our admin access after we install so that we can't possibly hack the rest of their network (which, or course, was the first priority on my list-- as soon as I knock out the other 37 issues I'm working on). We just need to make sure these folks actually read their SLA before they start rearranging things now and then...

holy wow. and here i am used to that being done as a cruel prank by my fellow geeks at my old university just to teach people to not share their entire hard drive on a network without at least a password. =p dumb people really are mind boggling
