I'm sure most of you guys have seen this form of spam mail. I have great fun reading it aloud to my coworkers in a hammy Richard Attenborough accent.

My question is how does this make anyone money? Are they trawling for replies? Is it Wintermute finally activating and attempting to make contact?

Or, more plausibly, is it spammers introducing noise to spam filtering systems? Can anyone confirm or enlighten?

My money is on the "noise" theory.

It's similar to obfuscation techniques for common penis enlargement pills.

Unfortunately, the "real" message is all written in HTML, which most spam filters don't bother to parse. Myself, I use Pine for my email pleasures, which can't understand coplex HTML anyway, or badly formed HTML. So the spammers park all this extra crap in the html code as comments or stuff that they know that outlook/outlook express (or a HTML capable reader of your choice) will toss out all the crap it can't readily parse and show you what they want you to see, which is usually a pictures of some makid guy with a limp willy as a before picture, and a "mount everest" after in order to push their pills (it also lets them know that the recipient is valid, because they can go back to the refer logs and find out via keywords and such who pulled the image down, and add them to 15 other lists)

Another theory is that they are trying to get enough "white list" words that the filters will think it's ham, and process it accordingly. Spam Assasin and DSPAM are pretty good at it, but it's not foolproof and the process almost always reuires tweaking.

Surprisingly, I get very little spam at home, namely because I have some pretty anal IP filters in place, and I don't give out my email to anyone unless i trust them.

address verification... they put the random words so it makes it past the spam filters. whatever doesn't bounce is a vaild address ready to sell to whoever's buying. (and increases the price since it's now a *validated* email address)

that's my theory, anyway.

I agree. I had one email address for years without getting spam, then for about 4 weeks I got emails from senders with names such as 'Planetarium R. Chimpanzee' containing content like this:

'Kende malamu

Like all great travelers, I have seen more than I remember and remember more than I have seen.
Difficult times always create opportunities for you to experience more love in your life.
Expansion means complexity and complexity decay.

Faith is love taking the form of aspiration. In the animal kingdom, the rule is, eat or be eaten in the human kingdom, define or be defined. '

..After that came the ads and they don't stop. But Thunderbird filters it out for me so I'm not too bothered.

Oh, yes. I love the random spamonyms... I posted those on my journal for quite a while some time back.

It's Skynet that's doing it, you just watch. Next thing you know, we'll all be growing on giant trees waiting to get plucked by robot spiders.

it's also possible that whatever you use for email (esp if it's webmail) is not showing you the entire message - by blocking HTML, images in particular. I was also puzzled by the torrents of that kind of spam which I got, until I realised that's what it was. There was usually a photo advertising (<sighs>) Viagra and thelike, but it wasn't being displayed because I'd set my webmail to only display text. Which is a general a Good Thing.
