I deal with very dumb people at work. I just had a ten minute arguement about a power button. The lady hits it so hard that she actually pops it from the holders in the back of the front plate. I tell her to just touch it softly and get screamed at that she knows how to use a computer and how dare I accuse her of hitting the computer. This exchange goes on for about 8 minutes and then another 2 are wasted as she goes on to tell me how the computer shouldn't be in the little cubby that most computer desks have. Instead it should be up on the desk so that when you get in, in the morning you don't even need to bend over to press the button. SHe also told me that the office wasn't ergonomic enough and that the button should be in an easier place to reach. I mean having a nice button in the dead center of the front of the computer is such a hard place to get to. Please, someone, tell me, did I do something wrong that i'm cursed with such people?

When I worked PC Tech Support, I so wanted a "Sterilize User" button next to my phone, also known as the "chlorine option". This button, when pressed, would send a signal to the user's phone, emitting radiation that would sterilize the attached user, thus weeding them out of the Gene Pool. See why I call it the chlorine option?

"You and you, Outta the gene pool!"

damn nation...

People like that, are the reason i explain most problems as an "I D ten T" error. or if you write it out: "ID10T". Just explain the precarious situation in which the two of you are involved.

Her: Person who breaks computers, and is too defensive to realize that it only needs to be softly touched. It's too bad that she has to open these cabinets to slam a power button at every station everyday.

You: Employeed for one reason, and one reason alone, because MORONS like this exist (so in a way, i guess we need them). Your job description involves wandering from location to location to rectify certain situations in which you and the person involved should have never found themselves, all because of that damn ID10T error... So while some people are unfortunate enough to have to open cabinets and turn on computers for a job, you have to deal with the irate jackasses who complain about something that you could swear on your life was just too simple.

I tell you what would be really funny... After she's left the room for the day, open up each computer and disconnect the power button from the motherboard (assuming that these are ATX system boards). Then not only can you spend the rest of the day "trying" to figure out what went wrong, but you can also accuse her of breaking the buttons because she hit them too hard. it will probably involve more work for you, but there's nothing more fun than watching these hapless idiots suffer.

_MaH

On that note, i'm thinking of screwing around with the default gateway for my campus network, just to watch the people in the computer lab suffer when they can't access their precious internet. That or ACK flood the network just to see what crashes...

I always has PEBCAK errors... Problem Exists Between Chair And Keyboard. On the other hand, the lady was right about one thing: computers should not be put in the cubby space in most office desks - it restricts airflow.

Oh, well, yeah that's probably enough space if you're not overclocking, then. ;-)

What kind of computer? A few years back we had a shipment of GX1's from Dell that had the same problem. Power button popped out anytime anyone pressed it. Seemed weird so we contacted Dell. They confirmed they had a shipment of defective cases that did that, and sent us a new cover for each of the Dell's we got that month.
