I had a great tech support staff bonding moment today. In their infinite wisdom, my school administration decided to send out one and only one email to the student body giving them their WebCT password. This email was sent in August, when I didn't need it, and was lost forever by this spring semester, when I *did*. So I moseyed on over to the Teaching Support Center to get my password reset by the kind folk there. "Hey," I said, "I need my WebCT password reset. I got the email back in August but thoguht 'What the hell is this?' and deleted it." They all just stared at me. Finally, one guy started laughing and said, "I think that's the first time anyone's ever admitted to deleting the email!"

Cool.

I've been in situations where a user asked me to walk the mail queues at work and remove an email that she sent before it got delivered to people. That was fun, and I got an "attaboy" for it, too.

I really, really hate it when lusers say "Ah, good girl!" like I've just made their TCP/IP stack out of macaroni and clag glue.

webct == the devil (especially vista if thats the version you use)

Only once has anyone been blatantly honest about doing something to their computer. This guy brought in a laptop with XP on it, said he would boot it up and it would blue screen of death and thats as far as it ever got. So I boot it up, and sure enough blue screen of death. I asked if he changed any settings or messed with any hardware before this started happening. He says, "Could that be caused by doing this?" *slams fist down on keyboard* "Yes, sir I think that could be your problem."

I've always wondered why users weren't honest. I can't count the number of times I've had someone explain that I must not have sent them the email or a piece of hardware (like a modem) was never in their computer, or something along those lines. Regardless of the fact I can prove to them that it was, I just say, "It doesn't matter" and continue from there.

I think there's a natural fear that the tech geek is going to "laugh" at them. It's this fear they are trying to allieviate. Or perhaps they are trying to impress me.
