Excerpt from my last call -- and no, unfortunately, it wasn't a joke. The customer was so upset I had to get a supervisor.

cu - What do you MEAN I have to have a computer to get dsl service?

Me - Because dsl is used to surf the internet. To access the internet, you need a computer.

cu - Well where is mine?

Me - You don't have one, you just told me so. You will need to go buy one.

cu - But . . . but . . . you guys sent me a modem! Where is my computer if I *really* need one of those to use the dsl?!?!?!

Me - because we don't make and sell computers, we make dsl modems and sell dsl service.

cu - Well no one explained this to me when I was ordering this!!! Why didn't they ask me?!?!?!

Me - Well, sir, they probably assumed since YOU called THEM and ASKED to be signed up for the service, that you already had a computer.

cu - Well why would they do something braindead like that?!?!?!

While this issue highlights how what luddites some people really are, it also shows a failing on the part of the sales staff. One would think that as part of the sales procees a customer would be asked what kind of PC they have (if for no other reason than to ensure they're not still using a 1988 vintage Amstrad or something equally insane).

Well, given how clueless some of the people I've dealt with in the past were, this does not surprise me one bit. And I'm not talking about the customers. I frequently bitch about how stupid some of the sales-monkeys I have to deal with are. Ours are bad enough, but some of the authorized dealers' reps could learn a thing or two from the customers. I've had a sales-monkey try to put a GSM phone on a customer's account, and then try to escalate to my boss when I informed him we don't offer GSM service, only AMPS and CDMA.

:(

That PC will be laden with spyware, adware and viruses faster than you can say "ActiveX".

Some people aren't meant to use computers.

(They should get a Mac...)

Oh god, that's a flashback from when I worked provisioning at Hellstra.

We had a cusotmer complain her DSL wasn't working

She had no phone line

Her PC was still in the packaging box she'd ordered it from Dell

AND SHE NEVER FUCKING ORDERED DSL!
