I have recently turned on the IIS services on my 2000 box so I can host my own website. According to the instructions I read, I needed to set up a colder in my C root called web_root, which I did. I named the home page default.html and you can connect to it fine. My problem is, if I try linking to other pages that I am hosting (let's say the page is webcam.html) I keep getting "page cannot be found" error. The html file is in the same folder (c"\web_root) as the default.html. I'm not sure if it is how I coded the link (currently its href="webcam.html"..but I've also tried href="http://www.myurl.com/webcam.html" and still no go).

Is there something different I have to do with IIS since I'm hosting myself? Is it something in my code? This is my first time writing a page (I'm a hardware guy) so it's possible I effed up the code. Any help would be appreciated.

first off, I'd suggest you turn of IIS immediately. There's more holes in that software than there is in swiss cheese. You're just asking to have your system OwNzoReD. try www.apache.org, it's generally considered to be one of the better web servers out there, and it's completely free and open source. Also far more secure than IIS.

Try typing in the name of the page into the browser instead of following a link. That will tell you whether it's the page itself or the link to it.
Also I suppose it could be some weird setting on the server, but like I said, I don't use IIS, so yeah.

uh.. running apache on win32? bad idea. worse than iis. iss should be fine if you keep up with the bug fixes, delete the default site and lock down any additional site you create. don't allow scripting!

Both of the methods that you have used to write the <a> tag should work but <a href="webcam.html"> would be the better option as, if you ever have to move the page to another web site or different folder, you won't have to change the code as much.

As long as the html file is in the exact same directory as the default.html file, the link should work. Most commonly, when the link breaks, it's because the file name is incorrect. Make sure that the file is *.html and not *.htm.

First I definatly agree with [livejournal.com profile] inahandbasket's suggestion. There are apache binaries for win32. In fact I used them on my work computer all the time. It did a great job of captureing nimbda requests so we could find infected computers and start cleaning them.

Secondly .. I don't know where your information came from, but the directory for iis is supposed to be wwwroot or www_root. Dun remeber exactly which. I use apache myself.

LOL... and to think I held off on the "Dear lord, don't use IIS... please... for the love of the Internet!" comment all morning. Whereas others felt no such reservations.
*grin*
