It was today that I got to turn to the tech at the next desk and look him in the eyes while saying the following to the caller in my most deadpan voice:

"So you're saying the modem has always worked before - up until the electrical storm which knocked out half your town and fried your local landlines."

(OtherTech gives me a "you cannot be serious" look)

"...and now you're getting hardware errors whenever you try and dial up. Which started happening right after the electrical storm. But it always worked before, until the electrical storm which fried everything."

(OtherTech is attempting not to crack up)

"...Why yes, now that you mention it, there might just be a connection."

(We have achieved loss of composure! Repeat, loss of composure!)

Heh heh heh. Teh evil == me.

Common enough call. The thing is though, in the DSL market (where we have supplied the modem) they expect us to cover the thing under warranty.

You explain that no electrical hardware is covered under warranty against electrical storms, and they get the shits.

"Nobody told me" or "Come on mate, fair go, just replace it".

There's a warning in the manual, and no we aren't just going to give you a free piece of hardware because the concept of electricity is too massive for your tiny blob of grey matter to comprehend.

I hate customers.

We're the same. "So your cable modem stopped working about the same time as the awesome clap of thunder, the flash of lightning, and the same time as the television blew up. No, we will not give you a new one. Pay for a new modem or go away and die."
