Yesterday as it happened
Jan. 13th, 2005 10:43 am8:50am I arrive at work.
8:50am and 2 seconds Major problem with a server i dont even manage but getting the blame for it falling over.
9:05am After hearing enough names and being abused enough i simply hang up
9:20am I get a call from the boss saying "wtf is going on?" Boss is away on holidays still
9:25am finish explaining the situation to the boss. Simply put it to him that being abused wasnt in my contract therefore he cant bitch to me for hangin up on the wanker
9:30am Boss and I decide to get a tech out to check problem for client
9:55am Tech arrives on site.
9:59am 30 second job. Client says he is refusing to pay before tech leaves.
10:19am Tech arrives back at the office. He fills me in with what was wrong. The powerboard for the server had tripped. He pressed the little red button and all was good again. (note this is a powerboard the client insisted we use instead of a UPS ((Uninterupted Power Supply, big battery type thing that regulates power))) Tech also informs me that client is running 2 heaters (its summer wtf?) off the same powerpoint aswell.
10:40am Client says tech didnt fix the problem. I tell Client that I cant send the tech out because he is busy. (he wasnt i just didnt want to have 2 site called that werent gonna get paid for)
10:45am I give client a clue about maybe unplugging one of the ??heaters?? from the powerboard.
10:46am Client informs me the thermistat in the office is broken and his workers would freeze.
10:47am I inform client that if he doesnt do it there is a possibility of a short and damage to his $5000 server. (yeah i know, hardly worth the bother isnt it)
10:49am Press's the button and it comes back to life. I inform client that he shouldnt have 2 heaters AND the server plugged
10:50am Client tells me its been like that for 3 days without a problem and that i am over reacting
10:51am I inform the client that when you short out electricity it can only lead to bad things. (i couldnt believe this guys arrogance)
11:22am Client calls : the server wont start
11:23am Why not i ask?
11:23am he tells me that the power shorted out and that the server wont even turn on.
11:24am I get him to try acouple of things. As he is down there he notices a BIG brown mark on the powerboard where the server plugs in.
11:25am I inform him that its either the powerboard or the server has probably blown up
11:26am Silence from the clients end
11:27am i send a service tech out with a replacement powersupply
11:40am Tech arrives on site. Motherboard dead
11:42am i inform client that the wait for a new motherboard is about 10 working days
11:43am i give client option to possibly restore data back onto a workstation so they may use it as a server till the motherboard arrives. Client agrees.
I LOVE being told by some business owner how to use or operate or keep computers. This guy had it coming and i cant say i didnt want it to happen cause i actually did wish it.

Date: 2005-01-12 03:52 pm (UTC)It's amazing how much business people complain about the cost of things that keep their business running (like tapes, UPS units, etc) but then have an absolute shit fit when 'realatively' cheap items like that they they've ignored turn into massive amounts of down time and data loss. as I and a (former) co-worker were fond of telling them:
How much is your company really worth? $1500 for a UPS and $600 yearly for tapes is cheap.

Date: 2005-01-13 05:48 am (UTC)two drive in a single hight bay. both hot swap and mirrored add adapter that now will allow one of the removed drives to be a usb drive. use any idea ata 100 drive you like of standard size.
no additional hardware the raid is all in the device, as far as the ide controller is concerned it is simply a drive of x size. device will rebuild a failed drive (speed depends on size) when a new drive is added.
i thought this was the coolest thing ever for an idea drive. now they just need to make a sata version.
looks like newegg doesnt carry it anymore, but here it is:

Date: 2005-01-12 04:49 pm (UTC)Unfortuantly, the techies at keysurf (dialup ISP that I'm using as it's the only sensible one price-wise) don't. Current record is an outage lasting a couple of days, with the status message on their website being "After this morning's server upgrade, all systems are working normally". Never mind that one of their routers (from my side) appears to be listening on 1.1.1.1
