one of the companies our call center takes calls for has cable service. The cable goes into a sort of "standby" mode when you hit the power button. The screen says "Press select for video"

I had a customer call and tell me that since her power went out last night she can not view her cable. I asked her what was on the screen. She read this exact line to me "Press select for video". I asked her what happens when she presses select for video. She asks me to hold on a moment. About 2 seconds later I hear her husband say, "it's working".

Go figure, when you have a message on the tv that says "Press Select for video" that means you should press the select button on the remote.

today has been a good day for odd calls.

I deal with this every day. People call me up and say "My install has stopped at 54%" I ask them what's on the screen and they always reply "Click 'Next' to continue". One lady stared at her screen for a hour before calling us to find out she's supposed to click that magic button next.

There technical illiterate and then there's "you're polluting my gene pool".

Favorite tech support question #38: "And what happens when you follow the instructions which are on the screen right in front of you?"

I love saying that exact quote out loud, just to see if I can get the three nearest people to crack up laughing.

Unfortunately, it's not as rare as I'd like it to be - we have an email app which, when it fires up for the first time after a user has moved to a different office, displays a screen saying "Select (our organisation name) from the dropdown list to continue", and has a screen-sized arrow pointing to said drop-down list. Guess how many people call me up asking what to do next?
