I give up

Since I work at a college, we get ungodly amounts of vacation time. We are also forced to use our time at the end of the year if we don't use it during the year. Most people save up their time to do just that. some people (like me), just don't have any vacation. Everyone else is just stupid. This latter group of people are the only people on campus right now, and they have been calling me all week. I want to kill myself.

Here's my most recent call:

Me: Helpdesk
Caller: Yeah, me, so-and-so and so-and-so and everyone else were just sitting here working, and everything was fine.
Me: OK.
Caller: Then, bang! All the computers shut off.
Me: All the computers turned off at once?
Caller: Yes! Isn't that strange?
Me: Did anything else strange happen?
Caller: Yeah, all the lights went off, too.
*headslap*
Me: The power went out. You need to call Facilities, not the Computer Help Desk. I'm not an electrician.
Caller: Oh, you guys don't just fix everything?
Me: No, no we don't. We fix computers, the network and related things.
Caller: Oh.

The worst part, that isn't even close to the stupidest call I've had this week. That's just the most recent.

I do campus support too (thankfully no residence halls - it's a community college). I don't get vacation. So for the next 3 weeks, I'll be pretty much the only person on campus. Look at the bright side - you can play your music as loud as you want and wear casual clothes, right?

It was more amusing when this happened at Sussex, and the UPS didn't. And there were two campus-wide 5min powercuts that day. Plus the aircon in the backup machine room died.

Needless to say the entire network was screwed for the next couple of days.

This is one of the many reasons to switch your telecommunications to VoIP. Because then, if the power's out, you don't get any lame calls like this.
