No firewall, no Windows updates, no anti-virus, no anti-spyware = No shit your computer doesn't work.
*insert sound of tech dying in shock that it's worked this long*

I had one of those today, connecting at 50.4ish (dialup) and complaining that Web pages were taking forever to load.

An unprotected Windows XP machine was breached within four minutes, and became a zombie in less than ten hours... (http://www.flexbeta.net/main/comments.php?catid=11&id=10621)

and yet when it was first introduced, power user groups around the world bellowed about how Automatic updates is a privacy risk.

General users are too fucking ignorant to update their machines on their own, letting it do it itself is only a good thing..and even then, a vast majority of the machines i get into my shop are NOT patched up.

Hell, i get quite a few that don't even have SP2 installed... then they wonder where all the spyware and viruses came from..shock..gasp.

To be fair to non computer litterate users, this is the first point at which computers have been vulnerable. When I started off as a newbie in the 80's there was no need to patch machines, install updates etc. The worst threat of a virus was borrowing floppy disks.
Most users expect kit to work out the box, and why not, I can't thing of any other product that needs this attention before you even try and use it.

at least windows updates work out of the box, yet people still ignore them thinking it's a spoof or a virus (at least the callers at my work are this paranoid) so we have a bunch of windows 98 unpatched virgins on campus.

Well, the alternative is having the "users" install the "service packs" that come in a particular virus carrying email claiming to be from SmallSquishy.
