Every time I open up a document and check back to the folder where I store the document, I find it littered with temporary files that are all basically called, "~WRL0358.tmp" I have tried deleting them but nothing happens. They disappear as soon as I close the document. There is one that I can delete and generally it's some mutilation of the title of the document. Exp: ~$cond Paper.doc for Second Paper.doc

Why does this happen? Is this a bad thing?

Word does this as a backup file.

It should automatically delete it as soon as you close the document, as you've discovered.

you know when Word autosaves your doc? that's where it saves it to. the original document is not touched until you close it. every change is saved to that ~$ version.

that means that if Word crashes, it won't delete that item, and all the changes you made that you "forgot" to save will still be in there.

in fact, it's probably a good idea to save them to cd every once in a while.

They hide themselves as files you work with and occasionally can be glimpsed when you exit the program fast enough, their horrible disfigured filenames and their shadowy appearance mark them as offspring of the horror. You must delete these files, but can do so only with a black candle mounted on your monitor and burning at the center (not the top!), as you delete them you must also chant "One Dee Ten Tee, El Zero Five Three Arr!" It helps to ring a small chime. This reminds me of a problem a user had a couple weeks ago. When she tried to open Adobe Acrobat Reader, the splash screen came up but didn't load the .dlls or anything - it just sat there. So after uninstalling/reinstalling the program a few times (and making sure the licensing agreement was accepted as machine admin), I finally googled the problem (the dirty little secret of tech support? lol). Sooo, found out that everytime you open Acrobat Reader, four temp files are created (.tmp) in the user profile temp dir. Her particular dir had the Windows maximum of 65,000 something.

Ever tried deleting 65,000 files in Windows Explorer? Heh, crash city. Went into a dos shell and deleted *.tmp - that did the trick.

Wow that sounds like fun. Sorry to ask but what's a dos shell? I'd actually like to learn stuff about computers in order to stop bothering everyone else about it. One must bother to learn, though. :)
