My dump takes them for like $5. Check your local transfer station.

Like Zig said, take it to your local transfer station. Or wait for your community to have a HazMat day.

put it by the curb and wait for someone who thinks "free monitor! it's broken maybe, but i can probably fix it!"
to come by and pick it up

done that with 3 old monitors... works like a charm

Put it on the expressway and watch a semi run over it.

Do not take it to Best Buy, as they do not dispose of old computer equipment.

Check your local transfer station, or use the 'curb' method.

I know someone that got a 23-or-something-inch CRT that way. Works fine, save for the fact everything has a slightly pink tinge..

not true

Best Buy / CompUSA had a recycling program that (according the the web link I was passed to) ended on Labor Day weekend, where you could bring in one system a day & they would dispose of it.

CRT disposal

- are there any electronic recyclers nearby?
- any TV/CRT repair places, that can use it for parts?
- any local, fellow geeks that want it?

Actually ...

Actually, no, Best Buy didn't. At least, none of the stores in the northeastern part of the USA were participating in it - it may have been a regional or district thing, or even just a one store thing (The lab stores out west do all sorts of wacky stuff). They DO have a recylcing drop-off for old cell phones, rechargable batteries, and ink cartridges / toner cartridges, in conjunction with an EPA program. CompUSA has ALWAYS recycled used towers, but I do not know if they do that with monitors or not.

Actually Best Buy will if you really insist. They should have you sign a paper.
