Here are my instructions:

"Click the apply button in the bottom right corner"

The customer just draws a blank and says

"What do I do?"

Although I don't think I would ever be this condescending on the phone, I'd think of saying:
see the little boxy thing with a cord coming out of the back of it to the right of your keyboard? if you put your hand on that and move it towards you and to the right a few inches, you'll see the little arrow on the computer's TV move down and to the right. When the arrow is pointing at the square on the TV that says "apply" stop moving the boxy thing, and push the button on top of it near the rear on the left side just once.

I used to work MS tech support, specifically Windows 98. Sometimes we had to get that bad when trying to explain to grandma how to get her taskbar back to normal when she accidentally dragged it to the top of the screen, or down below the bottom so you couldn't see it anymore.
