It's official. A jihaad against Microsoft.

Yeah, we are in a discussion in [livejournal.com profile] computergeeks about the firewall right now.

http://www.livejournal.com/community/computergeeks/437460.html is the post.

There is an item over on slashdot about this too.

Clicky (http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/08/17/0023206&tid=109&tid=128&tid=201)

The list of incompatibilities is just amazing. If we roll this out anytime soon I will be surprised.

I got a good list of the problems with it the other day from a friend.

Personally, I love my Sygate firewall. I don't need Microsoft's.

Microsoft firewalling is better than no firewalling at all.

That being said, I'll stick with my PIX 501, thanks.

This is true, yes. I had MS's firewall up in addition to the Sygate one for a while, but then I was having trouble connecting to one spot and disabled it during my troubleshooting. I ended up explicitely allowing the site through Sygate, then never bothered to turn MS's back on.

Haven't decided what to do with the SP yet, but I'll probably hold off a brief while, since some of the programs I use regularly are on the list of problem programs.

Microsoft finally locks down it's OS and people are bitching? Come on, it's a little bit of pain and a whole lot of gain, and you can turn off the damned firewall if you have to.

Finally a voice of reason. I hear all this bitching and just want to bitch-slap everyone who says nay about sp2.

XP SP2 IS A VERY, VERY, VERY WONDERFUL NICE AND GOOD THING.

If only it would force you to leave the firewall on and not boot of you didn't have a virus scanner...

I loved the Groklaw article on what Microsoft expects the bozo nontechnical consumer to do after SP2 breaks all their apps.

Who needs WinFW when you have twin Debian servers running iptables on Pentium-I 166MHz machines? :D
